My friend Julie & I made a brief trip to the flea market this morning and found a few great pieces:

Bridal bag & brooches

The white beaded bag is from Belgium

This pin is a signed Miriam Haskell piece. Miriam Haskell produced gorgeous costume jewelry for the stars from the 1920′s to 1950′s. Her company is still in production of magical pieces today.

This pin was sold as an ‘unsigned’ Miriam Haskell piece. Since bringing it home I learned that one tell-tale sign of her pieces is that the beadwork is tightly ‘embroidered’ with wire and typically not visible underneath. I can definitely see the wire-work underneath but have contacted the company to see if they can give me more information. Either way, it is a beautiful work of art!

Today I wanted to show you these fabulous vintage curtain tiebacks. Most are from the 1950′s and all have a heavy nail or spike which would anchor them to the wall to hold your curtains ‘back’.

You can never judge a flea market by it’s size. I was at a flea market this morning which was small & I just happened to find it on FB. I usually walk through quickly to see if there is anything I ‘have to have’ and then go back to linger, dig and admire displays.

I was so excited (it’s the little things) when I found these old Postal Stamps:

I think they are from the 1950′s & 60′s (notice the date on the stamp). I will clean them a little (saving the old ink & red patina) and then make them into cool necklaces or maybe even a funky ring.

I also found some tiny brass locks & keys and some great vintage forks for my brides!

These forks will be polished and hand-stamped to look like these:

I have to thank one of my assistants, Lindsay, for hand stamping and polishing the forks! Lindsay has been working for me for about a year and she is a stamper ‘extraordinaire’! My thumbs are damaged from years of jewelry making and Lindsay now does about 80% of the stamping for me. On the first morning I showed her how to stamp, she was as good as I am by noon! Lindsay is a Nursing student here in San Diego (always good to have a health care professional around our drills & grinders!) and loves to travel, cook & the outdoors. I am blessed to have her with us!

We love to make jewelry, bridal bouquets and more for our clients. As much as we love to design, we love the ‘hunt’ as well! We scour flea markets & estate sales coast to coast for our vintage treasures. Make sure you check back for our weekly Fleamarket Find!

Inspired

This past weekend our children were involved with FDF- a Greek Folk Dance Festival in Anaheim. Each February 100′s of Greek dancers and singers from across the West Coast, Arizona and this year-Cyprus and Brazil, get together to compete in dance and choir. It is 4 days of practice, competition, and ‘Faith, Dance & Fellowship’. It is actually so much more than that. It is a time to come together as a church family-not only San Diego, but we feel as though we are family with all of the churches involved. It is a time to treasure.

Congratulations to our groups who achieved 3rd place in both dance & choral. They were also featured as back up dancers in a new release of Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Stronger’ sung by Margarita http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efdK08k4HKk . I have watched it 100 times!

So, we come home inspired. Inspired to dance & sing more, participate in church activities more and to connect with all of our friends and family more.

Thankful

Today I am thankful for one of my Design Assistants, Ariana. I have known Ariana since she was a baby and she is my sister-in-law’s niece (I think that makes her a relative!). Through the years I would see Ariana at birthdays and holidays but she was quiet as a mouse! About a year ago I saw that she was a budding photographer and I was amazed by her talent. She had such an ‘eye’ for beauty, lighting and accessories. You can’t teach someone these skills, they are within. I asked her if she would want to join me and make jewelry from vintage finds and the rest is history!

On any given day she is polishing silver (which she loves, not!) , making tassel necklaces, maneuvering around Buddy-our lab who is always in the way or taking wonderful photos of our work. So…when you see beautiful photos of jewelry on my site-Ariana took them!

While we work we are always talking about marketing, Face book, Pinterest, Shows I have, shoots she is doing-it is almost always business or creativity based. She took some time off from SDSU to really give her Photography business attention and see if this is her life long career. I also know that she has an active social life:

She loves being outdoors-hiking, surfing and paddle boarding. I need to mention Line Dancing someplace!

She loves to travel-just this year she has taken road trips to Texas & New York. Yes, she drove across the country! I was so jealous.

She is the youngest of 4 and in her last year at SDSU-majoring in Business Administration.

She has two baby nephews and loves photographing them! Her families are always sending her cute photos while we work!

She is a photographer with serious talent. She is quiet, passionate and creative! Her specialty is portraits and loves taking High School Senior photos. She has done our Christmas photos and will be doing them again next week! Perfectly polished vintage tray mirrors!

We have many great events coming up in November & December so we spent yesterday on a mini photo shoot to show off what we’ve been working on! Special thanks to Lindsay as the model and Ariana, www.arianarandlephotography.com, for being my awesome photographer!

These vintage trays were really tarnished but with some extra elbow grease and some perfectly cut mirror-they now would look beautiful in your home! Come see our display at The Little Italy Mercato, San Diego Public Market and November 10 we will be at Williams Sonoma in Fashion Valley! See you soon!

Remodel, Week 1

We’ve had a busy week! We were able to find someone to remove our garage door-it is going to a fire station in Orange County! They are building a garage for an Explorer Program they have-it definitely felt good to give it to such a worthwhile cause! Here I was wondering if we were crazy for attempting to empty/move me into the garage and once JP removed the door and drove away to the fire house, I knew this was meant to be!

We started painting the bare wood and we even put in French doors and hammered on the shingles!

I love the industrial look!

I think I need a hanging plant or planter, iron chair…something cute outside!

Tomorrow we finish the drywall & paint the inside-we hope to be done by Friday. Moving will be a whole different story… I am leaving 3 rooms in a cottage, going to one large studio!

Remodel, Day 1

How many people would decide to a) sell their house or b) remodel their studio right as we turn the corner for the holiday season? Actually, this would be our second time we put a house on the market right before the holidays! I have to admit-it wasn’t a very decorative Christmas the first time-we had to keep it neat for prospective buyers!

Luckily this time we decided to only remodel my studio instead! (only being the operative word!). We are moving me out of the guest cottage (which was perfect!) and I will be going to the garage. Then we will remodel the guest cottage to rent out to a lovely college student in January. First-empty the garage:

Day 1 went well, we managed to take everything out and put it in the driveway! I envisioned several trips to Good Will but most of this stuff is mine and I use it at shows! Of course the sports equipment has to stay, the dog & cat food, the bottled water…my remodel is not going as expected. My 16 year old told me the garage move is stressing her out!

Let’s see how Day 2 goes. I want to wash the cement block walls and hope to capture that “ Industrial meets vintage bride” look!
